Anzaldua

pre-reading

Ethnocentrism is the tendsmcy to view alien groups or cultures from the perspective of ones own superior ethnic group or culture. No I have never heard of this term before. However I think you could say that it was Hitler's objective.

Questions for Discussion and Journaling

1) By not cluing us in, she is not allowing us to become part of that community. Therefore you cannot get a clear understanding of the community due to her vagueness. She is somewhat leaving us in the dark so to speak.

3) Yes, people need to have confidence in their writing to express emotion about what they are writing about. If one is not confident in their writing that can be felt by the audience. It can make what one is writing about very dry and not interesting.

Sure, because having confidence in myself and what I am writing allows me to express a deeper involvement in what I am writing therefore making it  more interesting to those who are reading it. If i am confident and interested in what I am writing others will be while reading it.

Applying and Exploring

2) No, In my opinion this writing was interesting to me because it kept my attention. I feel that if it was in the traditional format it would have been boring and harder to follow and understand.

3) Yes I agree, I think it takes us back to the  Mcloud reading about images, as it would make a lot of things easier for some people to understand.

An example I can think of is of the civil war, when you just read something about it. You get an idea of what happened, but when you see pictures with the text it really hits home about what they went through.

Yes, I think if you are working with kids is a time when you would do this.

Alexander

Q and D

6   I think that its restrictive because men and women do write differently. For example if a man writes about hunting that to most is acceptable but if a woman would do the sme writing most men would think that she didnt know what she was talking about.  Now let say that a woman did write it but with a male surname then it would be accepted as agood article by men.

7  Take the story the turnabout men are usually the ones that screw up then they feel guilty even if there are no feelings there i think he was trying to do the deed with as less hurtfulness as possible and after the bitchin that he got come to find out she did the same thing so how can she bitch about it if she does it too.  so for me it is very stereotypical to assume that guys are always wrong when girls can be just as wrong

 A and E

3  Well i feel that everyone can learn something from trans gender writings because if they were to use a surname of a different gender then most would be none the wiser after reading it .  so then its not what u look like but it is more about the language you use when writing

Delpit and Smitherman

DELPIT

Discussion and Journaling

1) Yes I feel that identifying her race would allow readers to see the passion in her writing and show a personal relationship between Delpit and what she is writing about. Identifying her race would show readers that she is not just writing about a topic in general to her. It would show that she is part of the discourse that she is writing about. I feel that her race identity does matter in context with the article. The message really doesn't change I don't think, knowing she is African American. Her message is still the same but identifying herself with the discourse that she is writing about would show readers that she really knows what she is talking about. Perhaps if she would put personal experiences good or bad this would also I think help to get her message across.

3)I do agree with what Delpit is arguing but I don;t necessarily agree with her views entirely with reference to Gee's writings. She defines 2 problems with Gee's writings when it comes to teaching literacy in the classroom. One being born into a particular social class and the other being values of one discourse conflicting with another discourse. However in his writing he also gives examples of how these problems can be over come. I feel he refers to them as problems that in fact do need changed, not that he feels this is and should be the norm. He gives in which students can over come this and even how sometimes those that have to work a little harder end up being better off in the the end. I do agree with Delpit however that teachers can and should have a big influence on students and they should be able to have resources available to them to achieve this.

applying and exploring

3)Yes I do see generalizations in Delpit's text. She says that just about any African American or disenfranchised person who has become successful has done it by acquiring a discourse other then the one they were born into.I feel this applies to anyone. We all have our primary discourse, family and heritage. In order to become successful we all have to acquire a secondary discourse, which then allows us to gain goods or money, or status from obtaining this discourse. Which you cannot do within a primary discourse.I feel that she is too vague in her explanation of this. She generalizes what Gee writes and should go into some greater detail on how things can be overcome as he states and not just skip over it.

SMITHERMAN

pre-reading

Yes I would say that we all have. For the most part I think you can tell a lot about a person from there speech .Stereotypically people with poor speech are from poor neighborhoods. They speak differently then most people. When I was in the military, people often ask where I was from because of my Appalachian accent. People from Chicago talk really fast. People from New England say words differently. They accent the A's.

Questions for Discussion

2) I think that she is just trying to show everyone that would read this article that just because you speak differently you are not necessarily different. I think that when this article was wrote that it was in the 70's, at a time when white people and African American people didn't see each other as equals. and she is just trying to get this point across.

Applying and Exploring

5) I feel that she is trying to say that no matter who you are, that God is God. There are people who are Catholic and Muslim. They have  the same beliefs but they call God by different names. Therefore God does not ever change.

Flynn

Questions for Discussion and Journaling

2) The time in which a piece of work is written is a big influence on how it is perceived I think. A lot depends on society at the time a piece  of work is written. At the same time I feel that a piece of work can also stand on it's own to a certain degree and that ability can make it popular for many generations. Also through the years I think it is possible for a piece of work to gain a different perspective that may in fact make it a greater work then when it was originally written.

3) I feel this means that men have become the model for which all writers are judged. Therefore women have had to adapt to this and not be able to think outside the box so to speak. This universalizes us instead of making us unique.

5) I believe for the time period it was for the most part accurate for the time period however not necessarily the norm. It  was convincing in the fact that I  could see the differences that were trying to be pointed out. However I believe that at the same time it was a little too far fetched so to speak.

applying and exploring

4) Yes the limitations are the fact that feminine study and composition have not really been thought of as coinciding.Feminine topics are not frequently a topic of composition. The models already in place for composition have left little room for intervention from the feminine point of view.Feminine research defines a difference between male and female developmental processes and the way they interact with others.A feminine approach would concentrate on the differences in male and female composition and why for example.

5) Male writing tends to be about oneself and woman's tend to be about relationships and connections with others.Male gender  also talks a lot about achievements or shortcomings and breaking away from community. Female tends to depend on  others and not individualize themselves.

Villanueva

3) The author is trying to make you feel sorry for him. By using a memory you are personalizing the article. Making it seem like you should read more. By using that memory, he caught your attention and made you want  to read more. Made it less institutional and more a story.

4) The poems were mainly about trying to fit in in my opinion. The passages were mainly about race. So I guess they contribute well since the article was mainly about race and fitting in.

8) That our forefathers were assholes. That it doesn't matter who writes about racism,it always falls on the white man. This may be too, but that was over a 100 years ago. Not all white people are racist.I feel that them writing about it is racist.

2) I feel that it pays a big role. I mean there are a few different stories and poems from different authors. He was able to find poems to go along with his text. I would say yes I think we do or write about has a little from the past experiences. If it didn't were would the enthusiasm come from. I think you have to have good and bad memories to come up with new and existing material.

notebook

1.  Each of us is a rhetorical creation. Out of an inventive world (a past a set of capacities, a way of thinking) we are always creating structures of meaning and generating a style, a way of being in the world. pg 262

2.   The kind of work we are suggesting involves what Krista Ratcliffe calls rhetorical listening, a practice that urges us to fundamentally alter how we hear and respond to the discourse of others.  pg 265

3.  let us consider, for instance, echolalia, a characteristic kind of language use among autistics, in which they repeat stock words and phrases verbatim that they have heard other speakers use. pg 265

4.  If we can come to see our autistic students through the lens of rhetoric more than through a stock and overdetermined lens of autism, we might come to better appreciate what they have to offer instead of fixating on what they do not.  pg269

1.  This to me is saying that we all have a distinct voice, our own way of speech or writing. That all people are different in the way we interpret what others say or do.

2.  Krista Ratcliffe, in my opinion, is trying to get people to take time and actually hear what someone is saying not only in actual words but in body language as well. Maybe this would help us to better understand more than what we have been taught from a young age.

3.  This passage kinda reminds me of the movie Rainman when (tom cruise) gets Raymond (Dustin Hoffman) to say that K-Mart sucks.  I also think that this is the way we have been taught to think of autistic people.

4.  This to me means that you shouldn't judge the book by its cover. That just because you are autistic doesn't mean you cant function in society. There are cases, so Ive come to realize, that some people with autism are very much a big part of society.

project 3 intro

Ethnography of Aviation Pilots
For my ethnographic study I have chosen to study the discourse community of aviation pilots. This is of great interest to me due to the fact that I am currently in the Aviation program at Ohio University to become a pilot and one day be  part of this Discourse community. The focus of this research is to bring a better understanding of what it means to be an aviation pilot as part of this Discourse community. I will achieve this by conducting an interview with my cousin who is a pilot, along with observing one of my instructors at Ohio University. I will also research genres that are used by me and my instructors. I will also bring to light a particular conflict within the community that deals with the concern of their being a shortage of pilots within this community within the next few years.
I will start by giving a brief description of what is required by a pilot within their Discourse community and how they meet the 6 criteria of John Swales, that he feels all communities need to meet to be considered a Discourse community. Pilots all have one common goal, and that is to transport passengers and cargo safely from one place to another. They need to have strong communication skills, depth perception, quick reaction time, and problem solving skills just to name a few. They have a method of communication, whether it is by in-person conversations with other pilots or by radio communication with air traffic control. They also communicate  whether it be by phone, text message or email with members of the community or outside of the community. They have participatory mechanisms in place to ensure that they are in good physical and mental health to be able to carry out their duties safely. This mechanism is the FAA ( Federal Aviation Administration). It is the national aviation authority of the United States of America. The FAA has the authority to regulate and oversee all aspects of civil aviation in the United States. It has the ability to issue, revoke, and suspend all pilot certificates. They require periodic health exams to ensure that Pilots and student pilots are able to carry out their duties safely. Pilots have many genres that they put to use such as flight plans, pre-flight check list, and the instruments in the plane that they monitor during flight. They also use a specific lexis or language to communicate. For example terms like “down wind” and “base” are used when landing an airplane. Lastly they have a threshold of members. The minimum age to obtain a private pilot’s license is 16 and the minimum age to fly commercial is 18.You have to have 40 hours of flight time to obtain a private pilot’s license and 250 hours to be commercial pilot rated. However to work for an airline you need 1500 hours of flight time. The retirement age for pilots is 65 years of age.
A discourse community is not something you can just partially be a member of. You have to be part of the community 100%. It is an identity and if you are not able to display that identity, then to the community you are seen as being fake. In some instances you can be in the process of becoming part of the discourse, like an apprentice or schooling. As a pilot you cannot be seen as being part of the community until you have studied and worked hard to earn your pilots license. Even after you have received your license you still have a lot of training to do to prove that you are able to be a part of the community. Sometimes when people work to be part of a discourse community, they become “fossilized” in the attempt to do so. As an aviation student if you attempt to earn your license and even obtain it but do not work to get the number of flight hours needed to be part of the pilot community, you are still considered to be an outsider because you have not proved that you can be an asset to the community.
Aviation pilots would be considered an acquired dominant secondary Discourse community, due to as members they acquire money from being part of this Discourse. This varies from a Primary discourse community which would include family and friends. People become part of a secondary  discourse most of the time as a way to support their family. However it can also be a non-dominant in that people can obtain a private pilot’s license and fly airplanes as a hobby and not to profit from it.
There at times can be conflict between someone’s Primary discourse and their dominant secondary discourse. This is most often temporary, but if not resolved a few different things can happen according to James Paul Gee in his writings in literary discourse and Linguistics. He says that many times people will fall back on their primary discourse, for example family. Being a pilot can sometimes put strain on a family. For example training to become a pilot can put a lot of financial stress on a family and changes may have to be made with in this primary discourse to adjust. As a pilot just out of school you may not get a job right away, or may get a job that does not pay a great deal of money. The job a pilot gets may not be close to home and may cause the pilot to be away from his family for long periods of time. However most likely with some adjustment overtime this conflict will resolve or the primary discourse can adapt to the secondary discourse. In some cases a person may have to use a related secondary discourse temporarily. For example a pilot just out of school may not get a job right away or may not make a lot of money at first. In my own experience being currently in flight school, I had to quit my previous secondary discourse as a union carpenter that I had been part of for many years. Once I have completed flight school, being a pilot will become my dominant secondary discourse. However I have union carpentry to fall back on if need be.
When working toward becoming a part of a particular discourse it seems at times there are those that do not have to work as hard and things just seem to come easy for them. There is a process known as filtering that takes place, this is when parts of one’s secondary discourse are filtered into the primary discourse.  As child is still acquiring their knowledge of their primary discourse, they are learning aspects of their secondary. As a child my father had is private pilot’s license and owned his own plane. So from a young age I was exposed to aviation. My cousin, whom I will be interviewing for this project also had his private pilot’s license. I was familiar with the basics of how airplanes worked and the genres and lexis of the pilot discourse community. Due to the exposure to the pilot community and the interest I have in becoming a pilot I feel that in some ways this gives me an advantage of someone who may not have had the exposure to aviation that I have had.

Malinowitz

questions for discussion and journaling

2) I feel that is is just as important to have lesbian and gay discourses in the classroom because in today's world gays and lesbian's can be more open about who they are. So it is only fair to have these discourses in the classroom along with heterosexual. It can allow for a better understanding of all discourses and help people to try and keep an open mind at least in the classroom, regardless of ones view or beliefs.

5) Sojourner Truth deconstructed the category of "woman" by proving from her own life as an African American Woman that woman are not weak and do not need catered too. She worked as hard as any man, if not harder as a slave and had 13 children that she bonded with and then lost. She had as much right to vote as anyone. I feel that she not only deconstructed the category of woman but she reconstructed it. She showed that woman can be strong and independent, not fragile as once viewed.

11) To me the term queer means someone who is not heterosexual and is used as a slang term. The definition has not changed for me. However I was surprised to see that it is used quite openly as a term to describe homosexual's rather then as just a slang term.

applying and exploring ideas

2) I have known the most of my friends since grade school. We all grew up in the same small town together. We all sort of speak our own language in a sense with one another. Everyone has a nickname for each other. I feel that I can be myself around them. I guess that maybe when I went into the army, I was around all different kinds of people from different places. I guess may be to an extent my language was silenced then. After awhile though I became part of a new community with a different language.

Meta moment

I feel he would think the most important idea is to at least try and have an open mind. Lesbian's and gays are both types of discourses.Views that we have are influenced a lot by society. So if for just a short time we can put those influences aside, then we may learn something new.

Materiality and Genre: Devitt, Reiff, and Bawarshi

Questions for Discussion and Journaling

2) The Genres of the 2 classes are different. In a composition you can choose a genre to write about that you may be familiar with. In art history or another class the paper would be based on a particular discourse community genre. This may not be as easy to research and therefore as an outsider to that community, it may not be fully understood and interpreted wrong. The conflict arises when as an outsider you try to understand the genre of a particular discourse community without having full knowledge of that group.

3) Examples of genre sets at Ohio University I feel would be notes taken in class and emails to instructors and other classmates. Papers that are written as assignments and exams given by instructors would also be examples of genre sets.  Peer reviews done in class would also be a genre set along with instructor feedback. I am a part of one or more of these genre sets on a daily basis.

Applying and Exploring Ideas

3)By researching through the ethnographic field world, you can focus on the general and the more particular areas of a specific culture. Basically not just analysing a culture through reading about it.Rather focusing more on communication and behavior, the lived experience of the culture. This can be done by gathering samples of genres and analyzing them.

Meta Moment

I believe ethnographic field work is the better choice to understanding discourse communities. In a sense you  can infiltrate the community by analysing genres and doing interviews with members of a discourse community. In doing this you get a better sense of the communication and purpose of the community. Where as if you just read about them you are getting the view of someone else of that community which may or may not be an accurate interpretation.

Project 3 proposal

Discourse Community Ethnography Proposal

I am going to write about airplane pilots as a Discourse Community. This is a community that I am working towards being in, as I am currently in flight school. I feel that this community meets all 6 of the requirements written by John Swales. They have a common set of goals, which is to transport cargo and passengers safely from one place to another. They have a method of communication, whether it be by radio communication to air traffic controllers,or in-person discussions with fellow pilots. They have participatory mechanisms that are put into place. As pilots, they are monitored by the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration). Pilots need to have mandatory routine physicals, to ensure that they are able to do their job safely.Pilots also have many genres that they put to use.For example  monitoring instruments during flight and filing flight plans. They use a certain language or lexis so to speak that unless you were a pilot you would not know the meaning of the terms. For instance "down wind" and "base" are terms used when landing an airplane. Lastly they have a threshold level of members. The minimum age to be a private pilot  is 16. You have to retire at age 65 as a pilot. In order to obtain your private pilots license you need 65 hours of flight time and to be a commercial pilot you need 1500 hours to work for the airlines. I feel that in doing research on pilots as a Discourse Community, it will give me a chance to to talk with other pilots and get a better understanding of what it means to be a pilot.

Wardle

1.  Engagement, Imagination, and Alignment.
Engagement would be when Alan started his job and sent emails to the staff and faculty.
Imagination would be the way Alan saw himself as "GOD" when in reality he was just a tool for the staff and faculty.
Alignment would be what Alan did not do as far as trying to get along because of his imaged job title.  It would be hard to give up what you were taught lust to have someone else tell you that its wrong now do it this way or its the highway.

3.  Because he imagined himself as something he wasn't.  So in his mind everyone else was wrong and he was right.  Well when he was hired they should have explained his job title in more detail then maybe he wouldn't have had his "God" complex.

5.  I agree with Gee and Wardle both.  Because when he started his job he wasn't in the dominate discourse.  And Wardle because of his imagined position in the work place.

Gee

3 I think that a Discourse is your society and a discourse is the way you fit into that Discourse society. Yes it makes sense to me if you are say on a construction job (Discourse) you have foremen and workers.  If you are a foremen then you are a dominate discourse and if you are a worker then that would be more of a non dominate discourse.

5  I think that it means if you think you know it and you act like you belong then most people will think that you do.

11 I feel that a metaknowledge is trying to learn something and at the same time figuring out what you already knew.

3 Dear whoever cares A Discourse is a group that you belong to. a dominate discourse is when you have mastered the Discourse to make money.  A non dominate discourse is when you have almost mastered the Discourse but you didn't make much or very little with no social gains.  I feel that you the teacher can do only as much as the student.

4  Ok take construction for instance a union contractor is for a safe work environment and a fair and equal wage.  while a non union contractor is there to do the job as fast as possible no matter what the cost (safety) and will only pay employees a fraction of what they are worth and pocket the rest.Thats why there are more accidents on non union sites compared to a union site

glenn

1. I am thinking of the chick-fil-a commercials. I think that they are funny and that they are directing there ads toward younger generations.  I personalydont feel that they are offensive. I am still going to eat meat so its okay in my opinion.
2.  I feel that my personal experience with farm animals is pretty good.  I had several friend who lived on farms as I grew up.

1. I feel that she grew up in a city. that she really didn't have any relationship to farm animals. She may have had a dog or cat.  That's why she has, in my opinion a more Peta type attitude. As far as the discourse I think that she is very informative. I think that overall she kinda knows what shes talking about.

2.   I picked Oscar Myer.  They are a farm factory. They tried to hide this by redirecting most of there advertisements.  They are not forth coming about what they do but then again for someone who wanted to find out about what they do it wasn't very hard.  Yes the really tried to be a family farm. they played themselves as a kids petting farm and really didn't talk much about what went on at the factory.

4.  I feel that the very wealthy do this all the time. They have servants who to them aren't people but an entity that just cleans after them. they don't know there names they don't acknowledge that they are people.

lab work project 2

topic
Effects of reading to a fetus or infant

question
Does reading to a fetus or infant cause them to be more literate at an early age

Well a am pretty sure my parents did this for me but i think i will use my daughter as an example.  I have a 2 yo and o know that during my wife's pregnancy we both would take turns reading to her.  We would also put head phone over my wife's belly to let her listen to music.  whether or not that worked that worked i don't know but she started talking at like 6 or 7 months.  One could argue that it was the reading or the music or that girls develop quicker that boys who really knows but that's what we are going to try and figure out with this project.

Tuesday, October 9, 2012

Well lets see I really dont know where to start. I guess as a kid my dad like working with wood. We used to do drywall and build things and I guess thats why  got into construction when I got out of the army. I was an airbourne mechanic in the army I lerned to over come adversitiy, how to work on vehicles.  I got to see some different cultures.  I spent a year in Korea that had to have some kind of literacy to me.  Anyway after the military I started warking with a gaurdrail company out of columbus did that for a couple of years. That taught me that road construction was very hard work and that not everyone is capable of the work that goes on in construction. After that I worked as an electrician for almost 6 years that was a very rewarding job. Some of the thing that you do as an electrician are pulling wire running conduit wireing up light fixtures, switches, wiring up panel boxes and so on you get the picture. Then I became a union carpenter I worked on bridges, in power plants, in dams and in office building. There is such a wide range in the jobs that you can do.  You can do dry wall you can do concrete work, metal studs, rigging, pile driving, and scaffolding. I did a little of them all but my favorite was scaffolding.  When I first started to build scaffold I didn't even know what the material was they would tell me to go get something and I would get the wrong thing but after a while I figured it out and became one of the best in my local hall.  The challenge in building scaffold is the layout not everyone can layout a scaffold. The actual building is not that hard just think of it as a big erector kit that you had as a kid its basically the same thing.  So I guess that I owe that to my dad. I beleive that has been a big literary influence on my life. But as for now I think the my cousin has been a big influence on me. He has been a pilot for about 20 years and I have talked to him for acoule years now and (with lack of work thanks to Obama) I have decided to go back to school at 38 to become a pilot myself.  I think that someday that will make my daughter a lot more proud of me that being an unemployed constuction worker. Well I hope this gives you a little insight on my influences in my life, and the gumtion to stay in school to better your lives.

Wysocki

I think that it works really good. It helps you to kinda see what she wants to say.  I mean did you read this article it was very hard to read and kinda boring.  So with the pics and highlighted areas it sorta broke up where your eyes would focus between text and the text in the pics.  I thought that it worked.
I think its like bernhart says because you dont want to muck that would make it more cartoonist so to speak.  With low text visual she keeps it more professional

Yes beauty is the eye of the beholder.  Not eveyone has thesame taste in art or what ever the subject is.  No I dont agree with Kant not all things are universally beautifull. Somethings that I like there are probably 10 othe people who dont loke it. So how can that be universalor inherently beautiful. Well I guess I already answered the last part just now.

I think that it says to get a good idea acrross that yiu need good visual composition wheter it be good or bad publicity. Bad publicity is still publicity.

Yes.  Take Playboy for example some people would say that it is art.  That the beauty of the female body is a canvas all its own.  Where others who might be offended might think of this as pornography that they are just exploiting women.

Baron

Discussion and Journaling

2  I don't feel this is what Baron is saying. He seems to be in favor of computer technology and feels that it is very important to his own career as a writer. Baron comments that it is beyond our own imagination what advances computer will make. As for communication in the future he will not make predictions about what computers will or won't do for literacy. He depends on the new technology of writing such as computers and feels that the old writing practices constrict him. Also he feels that we must not forget that writing it self is a technology.

4  Some examples of technologies like the pencil are: writing, the telegraph, computer, typewriter, and telephone.

Like the pencil, writing and the computer went through similar stages of technical spread as Baron calls it. At first they are seen as impractical maybe and people were not willing to use them. Once they were accepted then sometimes the availability of them were restricted. Eventually writing and the computer became more available and know and then eventually these technologies expanded and then began to be used. The cost of these new technologies decrease also increasing availability and use. When theybegin to mimic similar technologies then the spread begins. They then become their own technology and not just a version of an earlier technology and this gives new possiblity to new inventions.

The pencil was not initially made to be a writing device. A lead point stylus was first used to make lines for measurement marking.

Writing was not first invented for transcription of speech at first but for record keeping short hand.

The first main frame computer was first used to do calculations  with numbers.

Applying and Exploring

3 Advantages  of keeping records would be for important documents that would need to be saved or copied for future reference. Or to go back to a document to edit at a later date. Also another reason for keeping records is to ensure that it is authentic and not forged.
Reasons for not keeping records would be saving a password online to use a t a later date. Or important personal information that people could get access to and use illegally.

The telephone I feel would be an example of a communication technology that could be considered writing. The telephone combines aspects of speaking and writing.

Meta Moment

Yes it is easier to understand writing and to know. writing has not always been what it is today. it has changed and adapted just like other communication technologies.

X hooks

I feel that his intended adiunce is younger troubled minoritys for the most part he is trying to tell the younger generations not to be suppresed by the white man
we know this because history tells us that he was an avid civil rights actovist

Elijah Muhammond , charelstown prison, Norfolk prison, Bimbi, the dictionary, Nat Turner, that's good enough.  Muhammad he was someone that in influenced him that he would later preach for.  Bimbi he was a well spoken and literate person for being in prison and X wanted to emulate but couldn't so that's where the dictionary came into play if it wasn't for that then he would probably never became the person he did.

Yes i believe he is right.  In prison (so Ive heard) that inmate if they want can take care of a college education for the ones that are motivated they can rehabilitate them selves with reading and become a better person in society where us as real students have to much other stuff going on

It would mean a lot with all the medias out there anyone can b literate all he would have done was to go on CNN or msnbc Facebook the list goes on

Its hard to say what the teach would say were two different people.  I think that the idea of the story is to bring bad kids to an understanding that with an education that you could tun your life around for the better

                                                                Hooks

Yes i think that everyone does this at some point in time.  Its not that we are lying about those things.  Have you ever had one of those dreams where you swore was real. I think that you subconcience takes over sometime and you just cant tell dream from reality so now its a memory that didn't happen.

Well at the beginning she was having trouble with the "betrayal" of the family secrets.  As she talks to her siblings later on then she realized that they all had difrent memories of the same events.. she decided that it would be better to store the memories in a safe place so she wrote them down to not ever forget.

Yes her goal comes to life by the end of the text and she has in a way preserved her memories.

Because when you write it down you usually use facts and your memories sometimes suppresses so when you go back and read it then it sounds like someone else wrote it when in reality there yours.

Brandt

Discussion and Journaling

1 Brandt defines literacy sponsors as those who don't necessarily support or assist. They have their own individual reasons for supporting types of literacy. Literacy sponsors can range from people to institutions to circumstances. They can empower as well as dis-empower. They can help people to become literate as well as prevent them from doing so.

2 Brandt writes that sponsors enter into a reciprocal relationship[ with the sponsored. They have something to gain rather it be money or just by association with them. She feels that due to the abundance of commercial sponsoring in the 20th century from magazines to radio to essay contests, this turned the ability to read and write into a vast array of resources which led to the abundance of commercial sponsorship.

4  I believe that by stratified she is referring to how literacy is classified and how people fit into the different classifications of literacy. By raising the stakes I feel she is talking about keeping high standards so that certain expectations are met. It helps to keep things competitive. This helps to possibly force new literacy requirements into the stratified systems and also get rid of old ones that are not so appealing to the sponsor.

Applying and Exploring ideas

1 I feel that my primary literacy sponsors were my teachers and coaches in school. I looked up to my football coaches because not only were they there to just coach us in football, they gave us a basis for our lives once we graduated. They taught us discipline and respect. They also taught us that if you want something bad enough you have to work hard for it.That not only applied to winning football games but our lives once we graduated.

2 I can not think of a time where I have had literacy sponsors withhold information from me or force certain literacy's on me.

media moment

I feel that Brandt's article is relevant for understanding the concepts of literacy and multiple literacy's.It applies to having a greater awareness of the forces that have shaped us a writers and readers.

Bryson Questions

Before you read

3  It seems with technology has come a new language so to speak that is not necessarily grammatically correct. With the age of texting  and cell phones has come a whole new language in it self with the use of abbreviations to communicate and you don't even have to use words you can use whats called emoticons which are just pictures to have a conversation. It seems that we do not think about being grammatically correct as long as we can get our point across. Communication is literally at our finger tips. In some ways it affects how I understand what people are saying due to the fact that the younger generation today is much more computer and smart phone experienced then I am. However being exposed to it daily I can't help but learn the texting language. A couple of examples of "new" words are (BTW) by the way and (TNX) thanks, or (UGH) means disgusted.

Questions for Discussion

1  Bryson is challenging the construct of grammar. He argues that their are all of these rules in the English language and no one really is appointed to over sea them, therefore who really sets these rules that we have been taught. He feels that no one does and their is really nothing to back up these so called rules. An example sentences should not end with a preposition.

3 Prescriptive means to prescribe how language should be used and descriptive means to describe how it is used without taking a position.I feel I have encountered more of the prescriptive grammar instruction. Basically this is how you are supposed to use grammar and their are no exceptions to the rules of grammar.

Applying and Exploring Ideas

1  Bryson says English changes over time due to meanings of words change due to common usage. He expresses that it is a natural process that has gone on for many years. His opinion is that usage of words will push new meanings into circulation no matter how many people try to stop it. Bryson very much condones this change and he feels to stand in it's way would be arrogant.

Dawkins questions

Discussion and Journaling

1  I think the conceptions that Dawkins is challenging is that you don't have to write by only using the "rules" of writing that we have always been taught. That you can use punctuation as a powerful tool to express things in your writing and if you followed the rules of what you are not supposed to do with punctuation as taught it would be a lot harder to give meaning to writing. You can be a good writer without following the text book of rules that is forced on us from the beginning. He argues that you can take a comma out when old school writers say it should be there or put a comma in a sentence and they say it;s unacceptable and still be a good writer and give your writing meaning.

5  Before reading Dawkin's I had no idea that it was possible to write outside the "rules" of punctuation. I did not realize the many ways you can use punctuation to change the meaning of a sentence. We  are always taught that a sentence is a sentence a comma has a place and  period has a place and that's it. After reading Dawkin's I realized you can do things like "raising" to gain emphasis on a sentence. In old school writing this would not have been heard of and certainly not acceptable. I also thought it was interesting to see that you can use dashes and semi-colons in writing, although I am not quite sure how to use them.

Applying and Exploring

I remember being told in high school not to use run-on sentences and commas together. Commas should only be used in certain places and they should not be used to make a sentence longer. A sentence should not go on forever.

A letter  to my past teacher would probably say something like this.Writing would have been easier if we could have chosen how we wanted our sentences to read and if we could have been taught how to use punctuation instead of what not to do with it. You can use punctuation to give different meaning. For example you can put a comma in a sentence you can put more emphasis on a certain part of it. I believe this is called raising from commas to periods. You get more emphasis out of the sentence then if you just stopped with a period. The way  we were taught in high school, this would have been considered a run-on sentence.

The Controversy of Autonomy in Writing                                                                     English 151
 9/20/12
Steven Kapela
 Michael Newland

Autonomy in writing is a controversy that has been debated many times by various authors. Their are

many aspects of autonomy but it is centered around one question. Should Autonomy be taught in the

classrooms of our schools and colleges allowing students to think freely and be themselves. This

essay will provide several different opinions on the subject that may or may not change the opinion

that people already have about autonomy but will hopefully give a new awareness to the subject.

In the article Teaching Rhetorical values and The Question of Student Autonomy the author

Dennis Lynch brings to question, should teachers bring their politics to the classroom. He examines

contrasting views on this. One view was that students should be taught values predisposed by a

democratic society to promote social justice. In contrast another view was that teachers should not

push their beliefs on to students or attempt to change them. This would undermine "student

autonomy". Teachers need to give students guidance and support to help them learn and possibly

change their values on their own terms. He goes on to argue that trying to teach students or give

them appreciation in rhetorical practice should not compromise student autonomy. He feels that as a

teacher one should be able to hold any political belief and still be able to teach rhetoric without

 intermingling the two.

In complete contrast,  The False right to Autonomy in Education by Lucas

Swaine, proposes that autonomy should not be promoted in schools at all. He feels that teachers

should encourage students to stick to certain ideas of moral character. He calls this moral character

the "core conception" of personal autonomy. He stresses that he is not against giving students

choices to present ideas nor is he against learner autonomy. He discusses the different aspects of

moral character both positive and negative. He feels strongly that moral character and autonomy are

not compatible and if teachers promoted this core conception of autonomy it could very well lead to

surprising and unwanted results. He recognizes that children would benefit from positive

encouragement to build moral character in school however they should not be encouraged to develop

attitudes of the core conception of autonomy. He feels strongly  that this would harm moral values

and that it is not worth doing this to just build good character. He argues that the right children have

to be educated is not the same as the right to be educated autonomous.

In the article Freedom of Autonomy in Schiller by Sabrina Roehr she talks about Shiller's view of

autonomy. He separates autonomy from morals unlike Swaine who feels they are all one in the same.

He links autonomy with self determination yet separates it from reason. He implies that this is a

middle ground so to speak for both morals and autonomy to link together. Schiller feels autonomy

refers to the whole person not just the moral side as Swaine does.

Seeing the Text

1)These multiple considerations of audience and purpose functionally constrain the text, influencing it's shape and structure. pp 39

2) A second law of gestalt, that a good continuation, or good figure, suggests that visual perception works to pull figures out of the background, to give them definition against the undistinguished field in which they are located. pp39

3) The localization of the text makes possible the selective use of the text by varied audiences for varied purposes. pp 41

4) Instead of attempting to base teaching practice on scant and tentative results, we may find it more expedient to view the rhetoric of visual design as an evolving art. pp 42

Comments

1)When considering what you are going to write about you need to take into consideration multiple factors like the audience you are trying to reach and to make it interesting enough to not only get their attention but keep their attention also. You need to be able to put all necessary information in the writing but yet do it in a visual way that does not overwhelm the reader and still get them interested and able to focus on the important topics.

2)  The layout of the text plays a big part in how the writing is perceived. By good continuation the writer can emphazie certain points in the text visually and put importance on certain points. This I feel will also make the text interesting and organized and easy for the reader to follow. With good continuation the reader does not have to try to fill in missing pieces which can lead to a misconception of what the writer is trying to say.

3) The way the text is layed out helps to keep topics organized. It allows the reader to go to a certain area and get the information that they need without having to jump around the pages. It gives easy access to importnat information that the reader is looking for. This helps to keep the reader focused and interested in the topic. It is also a way to reach many different audiances at the same time. They may not all be reading the text for the same reasons but they will all be able to find the topic important to them easily.

4) The essay format that we were taught in high school was the same layout over again with maybe a different topic. There was no discussion of visual design or rhetorical content. I feeling that allowing students to broaden their research and writing ideas will allow for better written assignments. It seems also that with so much emphasis on internet and media these days that it will eventually become impossible to not incorperate visual presentation at least to some degree to our assignments.

Porter

Discussion and Journaling

4) Writing from what I get from this article is evaluated buy certain forums, which is basically a group of people that have knowledge of what they are evaluating and also have guidelines that they have to adhere to.He feels that the key criteria for this is the "acceptability" within the reader's community. The piece of work being evaluated must contribute something to the field along with demonstrating familiar characteristics of previous pieces of writing. It also has to meet specific criteria within the group and testing so to speak to be considered an acceptable piece of work. This community will influence other writers also.

I did not really have a basis to go on prior to reading Porter's article. However this makes sense to me and I can see how a piece of work is evaluated by a certain group of people and how they influence writers and their work.

The only thing I have to compare to would be writing as a high school student. The only person that evaluated my work was the teacher who may have had knowledge in writing in general but not knowledge on a certain topic that I was writing about. Where as in Porter's article the community that is evaluating the pieces of work he is talking about is very educated in this field and has a background in what they are evaluating.

5} Porter's article I feel reflects the principles that he is writing about in that he is discussing the ways that intertextuality affects research and writing and how it is also affected by an audience or forum that analyzes pieces of work. He is not writing as a autonomous person in that I think his writings in this article are taken from other authors examples and Porter's own research on the 4 examples that he gives under the Presence of Intertext. He also states in his writing that intertextuality can also come from audience expectation. So as we read this article we may have more of an influence on how it is perceived then how Porter wrote it.

Applying and Exploring

2) Plagiarism has always been a very strict rule when it comes to writing. The school definition basically allows you to not use any part of any ones work unless it has been  quoted and referenced too. My definition of plagiarism using Porter's example would be that you could use other authors ideas as long as you could be creative enough to put your own twist on them to make it your own and showed that you did the research needed to make it your own. My definition is probably not strict enough and would lead to plagiarism being a big problem in writing class. However I do feel at times the current rule of plagiarism can be too strict and can cause writers to not be able to write about things they truly want to write about. If their was a way to meet in the middle between plagiarism as we have been taught and my example using Porter's views writing may become a little more interesting.

MM

Porter's article seems to imply that writers spend more of their time researching and talking to people to get ideas and information for their text. It does not seem like writers spend a lot of time on their own because the basis of their writings is their research and discussion with others.I always pictured writers as people that would go off for months at a time and lock themselves in a room and write until their work was done.Porter's article seems to state that authors actually do the complete opposite. I feel that I would most likely be the writer portrayed in Porter's article.

Getting Ready to Read

1)There are many ways to construct an identity on Facebook. Information about ones self can be put on the profile page such as  where you went to school and where you work. You can a profile picture and post other pictures to your albums. All of these make up who we are and forms our identity. You can do status updates about yourself, post comments and "like" different pages which can also show your identity by letting people know what you are interested in.

Your identity at home may differ from that on Facebook in many ways. Some people my choose to be more conservative about themselves online where others tend to paint a picture so to speak of themselves that may not be their true identity but what they want people to think about them. Identity at home is your true self and what people who know you well see as your identity.

2) Using the first person within our writing assignments  I feel would allow us to make our writing more personal rather then subjective. It would allow for more feeling and emotion. Not using first person I think can make us distance ourselves from our writing, not intentionally but using 'I" seems to automatically make things seem more personal to ourselves and also affects how the audience perceives them.

Discussion/Journaling

Voice is our inner self. We use it to express ourselves in many aspects of our lives. From writing to how we dress to how we act around others. It is there in every aspect of our daily lives. Yes I believe there are many definitions of voice and I believe we are exposed to them every day especially from the media and the Internet. I definitely agree with Elbow's definition of voice. Taking from his explanation of sincerity as an example of voice, I feel that political figures do this a lot to sound sincere and really touch their audience on a personal level whether what they have to say is true or not. That want to capture their audience. We see this daily on the news right now with the upcoming election being in just a few months.

Apply and Explore

Sincerity is a voice that can be convincing and can easily win the attention of readers

Resonance is when a writer can get lost in their words and may get off track for a short time in their writing.

I do not feel that I had much difficulty coming up with the meanings of these to examples of voice. However the meaning may be different to someone else. Having difficulty with their meaning may show that  you do not understand them or you may have a hard time putting the meaning into your own words.

Connecting to Other Readings

Elbow believes voice is very much rhetorical and is used to make specific arguments. However n Kleine's research he found that his subjects from the sciences seemed to be more interested in the research process itself  and not the rhetorical aspect involving the audience. They were more interested in gathering information and not what the audience would think or feel. Where the subjects from the Humanities were more interested in the rhetorical aspect of the writing.

Berkenkotter and Murray

Discussion and Journaling

1}I felt that Murray's writing process was very off the wall so to speak. Seemed like a lot of repeat work but at the same time seemed to work well for him. I at this point have not developed a good writing process. I am still trying to understand the concept of writing as it has been many years since I have had to write. I liked the idea of his dictations. Seems like it would be easier to review and draft your work.

3} Prior to he study of Murray Revision and planning seemed to be 2 separate steps in the writing process. While studying Murray's writing habits she used a coding process to evaluate his process. She realized by this that the 2 were virtually inseparable. He combined them into one process described as Reconciving.

Applying and exploring

1} I have very little writing experience. This is all very new to me. I am at this point trying to understand the steps of the writing process and apply them the best I can to the upcoming paper I am writing. I feel that with experience comes  a better understanding and it's not always the quantity of time you spend but the quality of your work when it is completed but at the same time you do need to put time and effort into your work.

MM

As I referred to in one of the prior questions, I like the idea of the dictation process. I may try this in my own writing to see if it works for me.  Seems like a good idea but may not be once I have tried to use it. Seems like it would be easier to keep thoughts and ideas together.

Allen

Getting ready to read

It seems from reading Sarah Allen's The Inspired Writer Vs the Real writer that student writers seem to focus more on the draft of a formal paper along with the grammar and punctuation. They are use to writing in a high school setting and tend to follow the 5 paragraph formula that Allen refers to.Professional writers focus on strategies and revision of their work. They are similar in that both student and professional writers all struggle at times.Allen refers to the sinking, spinning feeling she still gets when reading and writing along with the trudging feeling at times when searching for ideas. All writers student or experienced all come to the same road blocks.

Applying and Exploring ideas

I have not personally used this method of imitation in my own writing. This is the first writing class I have been in since high school 20 years ago. I feel however that this method my help someone in my position that is trying to learn the process of writing to begin to put together the process of writing and then form my own individual ideas and methods.

Discussion and Journaling

Allen believes that the myth of the inspired writer is that writing comes easily to he/she. The reality is that the inspired writer also had to answer to great writings that were before them. They to in fact had to deal with struggling for ideas and the feeling that their work did not meet the standards put before them. This works against us as student writers in the fact that this myth gives us the feeling that if writing does not come easy to us we can never be good at it. It makes us give up so to speak on trying to be good writers and put less time and effort into our work because we assume that if we struggle our writing is not good.

MM

Yes the idea of the inspired writer affects me now as I am trying to work on the first project of this writing class. By reading her article I have come to realize that I am not alone in the feeling of being unable to be inspired or write. It also makes me realize that it is okay that ideas and understanding the process of writing does not come easy to me.

New Proposal

I believe I have a little bit better understanding of what we are supposed to be writing about. This is definitely a learning process.

Taking from my first proposal, the construct that I am going to write about is the freedom to pick your own topic in writing. Ideas and topics seem to be the basis for any piece of writing. If one is able to choose their own topic and come up with their own ideas then they are more likely to to make the writing more interesting to an audience. The freedom to make choices and decisions in writing will make one grow as a  student and as an individual and at the same time giving  a better understanding of writing. It lets us be individuals and write about what interests us and not what interests someone else or what they think should interest us.It is a way to express ones self and feelings and this is what makes us all unique. This individuality is the voice of ones self through their writing. Our work will be more authentic and original which will capture the audience attention. If a topic is interesting to us we are more likely to do better research, which will lead to better ideas, arguments, facts, and opinions. This will not only make the writing more interesting for the audience but will also help to broaden and strengthen our writing skills. If you don't care about the topic you are writing about or it doesn't interest you, then most likely the audience will not be interested either.

Berger

I think if I were going to draw a picture of  a woman I would have her face to the left with her head looking back over her right shoulder. Because to me that would be how I wanted to see her in my drawing. That is probably one of the best ways to show her sexuality without demeaning her but at the same time would make her the focus of the drawing.

You set the scene up to where she would be in direct moonlight off a lake or a pond with a Shaw over her left shoulder draped down to about the middle of her back. A few fully bloomed trees with freshly cut grass.

This would be a nude painting because it shows the vulnerability of the woman to which would make people see her as a person that most could relate to as shy but still very much a woman of sexuality.

Classical art typically portrayed woman and men nude. This was seen in that time period as normal.Men were usually the painters and this is how they interpreted their sexuality. Modern day art and pictures in magazines still portray woman sexually but nudity is not accepted as it was in the day of classical art. Woman today are also seen as more independent and strong not just for their sexuality alone.

Discussion Question#1

Yes I think that where they portrayed these woman they had their self  pleasures in mind. At the same time they are trying to make them tasteful enough not to make them so risque. I think that Berger Would agree to a point. He may not say that I am a hundred percent right bu for the most part would be spot on.

#2

You see women in advertising all over the place in sexual poses anywhere from makeup ads to Victoria Secret catalogs. I don't think much has changed they still show woman as sex symbols because men are still seen as the ideal spectator.

I think that the portrayal of woman is still the same, they have something that sells. Maybe in mid-evil Europe the product was different but it was still a product.Woman are shown to be more powerful and strong minded in today's culture.Men want to see this to make them feel masculine in all aspects of life.

Apply Question #1

Men in classical art were also portrayed for their sexuality but not in the same sense as today. Modern art/pictures portray men more for their masculinity. Yes  I feel their is a generation gap between them and it is greatly affected by the way they are portrayed.

#2

When reading the spectator would be us the reader and the subject would be the text we are reading.i don't enter in relations ships the only time you should is if its something you want to read.

Mcloud

Before you read

You can see faces in the knots of the wood grain on the desk and can also find them in the ceiling tiles. When you closely enough at each knot you see different faces. Each is unique in it's own way. They all resemble faces but not anyone in particular. They all resemble something such as birds bills, the eyes of animals, just different animals none are really human to me.

Discussion question #1

I think that adults still like the simplicity of cartoons because it takes us back to child hood where everything was simple and you didn't have much responsibility. You could relate to what you are watching or reading it was an illusion of heroism or made you want to become something yo were not.

No because like I said before you can relate to simpler times. You can imagine yourself as being a hero or a funny character in comics.

I think that he would have said that I am right. I think that is why he wrote it in that way because he still thinks in that way. He and I think in my opinion that it's not a dry article and with cartoons you can come across  easier and make it more interesting. That way you can keep your readers entertained.

#2

I think that i answered this question but lets reiterate. I think he uses this format to keep the reader interested with pictures. It helps to break up the reading with visual props.

If you did not have pictures and only text I think that it would have been very hard to read and that no one could keep focus on the topic. If that were the case you would have to read it several times and you would be so confused that you would not get the main point of the article.

Apply Question #1

Yes the imagery helps put the main topic into a better perspective. Take the Writing about Writing book, if it had more pictures to help integrate the topic I would find it more interesting, not so bland and dry. It would help me to grasp the concepts easier.

#2

I believe that he says that because what we are doing when we see those images is not really putting it in our own image but putting it in a simpler for as children do.

I am sure that we do that more then we think. I think that in our subconscious mind we try to relate to most things we see and read, so that we can understand what is going on to to try to imagine what it would be like to be in their shoes so to speak.

Proposal

Proposal
September 5, 2012

In order to write an informative paper you need to be interested in the topic you are writing about first. I have chosen to write on the topic of the recent Ohio State Buckeye football scandal. While doing research for this paper it will be very easy to fall into the "gap" of research and become opinionated. My goal is to apply the rhetorical analysis aspect of writing and gathering information. There are many facts and opinions to this topic.Keeping an open mind while doing this research will help me follow Toulmin's Model of Argument and use Greene's method of Argument as Conversation to relay the information to readers.

Kantz questions

September 5, 2012
Question 1:   I believe that Kantz feels that both facts and opinions are the same thing with a twist. The twist being how the reader perceives the information given to them. The argument between fact and opinion is that the reader will accept facts without being proved but may want further explanation. An opinion however is perceived as a claim and may require further proof but even after this is given it may be decided that their is still only limited truth to the information given and may still be open for further discussion..

Question 2:   Misunderstanding how  the Kinneavy's triangle works by only considering 1 point.
Not setting goals or asking questions before starting research.
                      Blindly accepting ideas
Not understanding the idea of Rhetorical analysis and falling into a gap.
Not summarizing main ideas of reading.

Yes I feel she is correct in that we fall into a gap of only perceiving what is easily available instead of considering all information available.

I understand the goal of Rhetorical research but I am not sure I completely understand how to put it to use.

A and E Question 2:    It's been 20 years since I have been in high school and have had to do research for writing. However this can be applied to everyday life so to speak. In life we tend to do the things listed above without being open to new ideas. We also tend to believe what is put in front of us so to speak and not look further into the situation.

MM:    I feel she is trying to analyze the Rhetorical analysis and gaps that we tend to fall into while researching. Understanding this will help me to gather research more effectively and gain more useful information by applying her findings and claims.

English 151

Question 1      I cannot really relate to what he is talking about as far as research for writing because this is my first experience.I having nothing to make a comparison too. However I can relate it to my job as a union carpenter.

Question 3     Sources play a very big role in their research and are the base for his research. I have never had to research for writing purposes but again this example of gathering information can be related to everyday life in the workplace.

Question 4     I don't think I would really change anything at this point. However more experience with writing may change my mind in the future.
