Getting Ready to Read

1)There are many ways to construct an identity on Facebook. Information about ones self can be put on the profile page such as  where you went to school and where you work. You can a profile picture and post other pictures to your albums. All of these make up who we are and forms our identity. You can do status updates about yourself, post comments and "like" different pages which can also show your identity by letting people know what you are interested in.

Your identity at home may differ from that on Facebook in many ways. Some people my choose to be more conservative about themselves online where others tend to paint a picture so to speak of themselves that may not be their true identity but what they want people to think about them. Identity at home is your true self and what people who know you well see as your identity.

2) Using the first person within our writing assignments  I feel would allow us to make our writing more personal rather then subjective. It would allow for more feeling and emotion. Not using first person I think can make us distance ourselves from our writing, not intentionally but using 'I" seems to automatically make things seem more personal to ourselves and also affects how the audience perceives them.

Discussion/Journaling

Voice is our inner self. We use it to express ourselves in many aspects of our lives. From writing to how we dress to how we act around others. It is there in every aspect of our daily lives. Yes I believe there are many definitions of voice and I believe we are exposed to them every day especially from the media and the Internet. I definitely agree with Elbow's definition of voice. Taking from his explanation of sincerity as an example of voice, I feel that political figures do this a lot to sound sincere and really touch their audience on a personal level whether what they have to say is true or not. That want to capture their audience. We see this daily on the news right now with the upcoming election being in just a few months.

Apply and Explore

Sincerity is a voice that can be convincing and can easily win the attention of readers

Resonance is when a writer can get lost in their words and may get off track for a short time in their writing.

I do not feel that I had much difficulty coming up with the meanings of these to examples of voice. However the meaning may be different to someone else. Having difficulty with their meaning may show that  you do not understand them or you may have a hard time putting the meaning into your own words.

Connecting to Other Readings

Elbow believes voice is very much rhetorical and is used to make specific arguments. However n Kleine's research he found that his subjects from the sciences seemed to be more interested in the research process itself  and not the rhetorical aspect involving the audience. They were more interested in gathering information and not what the audience would think or feel. Where the subjects from the Humanities were more interested in the rhetorical aspect of the writing.
