3 It seems with technology has come a new language so to speak that is not necessarily grammatically correct. With the age of texting and cell phones has come a whole new language in it self with the use of abbreviations to communicate and you don't even have to use words you can use whats called emoticons which are just pictures to have a conversation. It seems that we do not think about being grammatically correct as long as we can get our point across. Communication is literally at our finger tips. In some ways it affects how I understand what people are saying due to the fact that the younger generation today is much more computer and smart phone experienced then I am. However being exposed to it daily I can't help but learn the texting language. A couple of examples of "new" words are (BTW) by the way and (TNX) thanks, or (UGH) means disgusted.
Questions for Discussion
1 Bryson is challenging the construct of grammar. He argues that their are all of these rules in the English language and no one really is appointed to over sea them, therefore who really sets these rules that we have been taught. He feels that no one does and their is really nothing to back up these so called rules. An example sentences should not end with a preposition.
3 Prescriptive means to prescribe how language should be used and descriptive means to describe how it is used without taking a position.I feel I have encountered more of the prescriptive grammar instruction. Basically this is how you are supposed to use grammar and their are no exceptions to the rules of grammar.
Applying and Exploring Ideas
1 Bryson says English changes over time due to meanings of words change due to common usage. He expresses that it is a natural process that has gone on for many years. His opinion is that usage of words will push new meanings into circulation no matter how many people try to stop it. Bryson very much condones this change and he feels to stand in it's way would be arrogant.

Dawkins questions
Discussion and Journaling
1 I think the conceptions that Dawkins is challenging is that you don't have to write by only using the "rules" of writing that we have always been taught. That you can use punctuation as a powerful tool to express things in your writing and if you followed the rules of what you are not supposed to do with punctuation as taught it would be a lot harder to give meaning to writing. You can be a good writer without following the text book of rules that is forced on us from the beginning. He argues that you can take a comma out when old school writers say it should be there or put a comma in a sentence and they say it;s unacceptable and still be a good writer and give your writing meaning.
5 Before reading Dawkin's I had no idea that it was possible to write outside the "rules" of punctuation. I did not realize the many ways you can use punctuation to change the meaning of a sentence. We are always taught that a sentence is a sentence a comma has a place and period has a place and that's it. After reading Dawkin's I realized you can do things like "raising" to gain emphasis on a sentence. In old school writing this would not have been heard of and certainly not acceptable. I also thought it was interesting to see that you can use dashes and semi-colons in writing, although I am not quite sure how to use them.
Applying and Exploring
I remember being told in high school not to use run-on sentences and commas together. Commas should only be used in certain places and they should not be used to make a sentence longer. A sentence should not go on forever.
A letter to my past teacher would probably say something like this.Writing would have been easier if we could have chosen how we wanted our sentences to read and if we could have been taught how to use punctuation instead of what not to do with it. You can use punctuation to give different meaning. For example you can put a comma in a sentence you can put more emphasis on a certain part of it. I believe this is called raising from commas to periods. You get more emphasis out of the sentence then if you just stopped with a period. The way we were taught in high school, this would have been considered a run-on sentence.

The Controversy of Autonomy in Writing English 151
9/20/12
Steven Kapela
Michael Newland
Autonomy in writing is a controversy that has been debated many times by various authors. Their are
many aspects of autonomy but it is centered around one question. Should Autonomy be taught in the
classrooms of our schools and colleges allowing students to think freely and be themselves. This
essay will provide several different opinions on the subject that may or may not change the opinion
that people already have about autonomy but will hopefully give a new awareness to the subject.
In the article Teaching Rhetorical values and The Question of Student Autonomy the author
Dennis Lynch brings to question, should teachers bring their politics to the classroom. He examines
contrasting views on this. One view was that students should be taught values predisposed by a
democratic society to promote social justice. In contrast another view was that teachers should not
push their beliefs on to students or attempt to change them. This would undermine "student
autonomy". Teachers need to give students guidance and support to help them learn and possibly
change their values on their own terms. He goes on to argue that trying to teach students or give
them appreciation in rhetorical practice should not compromise student autonomy. He feels that as a
teacher one should be able to hold any political belief and still be able to teach rhetoric without
intermingling the two.
In complete contrast, The False right to Autonomy in Education by Lucas
Swaine, proposes that autonomy should not be promoted in schools at all. He feels that teachers
should encourage students to stick to certain ideas of moral character. He calls this moral character
the "core conception" of personal autonomy. He stresses that he is not against giving students
choices to present ideas nor is he against learner autonomy. He discusses the different aspects of
moral character both positive and negative. He feels strongly that moral character and autonomy are
not compatible and if teachers promoted this core conception of autonomy it could very well lead to
surprising and unwanted results. He recognizes that children would benefit from positive
encouragement to build moral character in school however they should not be encouraged to develop
attitudes of the core conception of autonomy. He feels strongly that this would harm moral values
and that it is not worth doing this to just build good character. He argues that the right children have
to be educated is not the same as the right to be educated autonomous.
In the article Freedom of Autonomy in Schiller by Sabrina Roehr she talks about Shiller's view of
autonomy. He separates autonomy from morals unlike Swaine who feels they are all one in the same.
He links autonomy with self determination yet separates it from reason. He implies that this is a
middle ground so to speak for both morals and autonomy to link together. Schiller feels autonomy
refers to the whole person not just the moral side as Swaine does.

Seeing the Text
1)These multiple considerations of audience and purpose functionally constrain the text, influencing it's shape and structure. pp 39
2) A second law of gestalt, that a good continuation, or good figure, suggests that visual perception works to pull figures out of the background, to give them definition against the undistinguished field in which they are located. pp39
3) The localization of the text makes possible the selective use of the text by varied audiences for varied purposes. pp 41
4) Instead of attempting to base teaching practice on scant and tentative results, we may find it more expedient to view the rhetoric of visual design as an evolving art. pp 42

Comments
1)When considering what you are going to write about you need to take into consideration multiple factors like the audience you are trying to reach and to make it interesting enough to not only get their attention but keep their attention also. You need to be able to put all necessary information in the writing but yet do it in a visual way that does not overwhelm the reader and still get them interested and able to focus on the important topics.
2) The layout of the text plays a big part in how the writing is perceived. By good continuation the writer can emphazie certain points in the text visually and put importance on certain points. This I feel will also make the text interesting and organized and easy for the reader to follow. With good continuation the reader does not have to try to fill in missing pieces which can lead to a misconception of what the writer is trying to say.
3) The way the text is layed out helps to keep topics organized. It allows the reader to go to a certain area and get the information that they need without having to jump around the pages. It gives easy access to importnat information that the reader is looking for. This helps to keep the reader focused and interested in the topic. It is also a way to reach many different audiances at the same time. They may not all be reading the text for the same reasons but they will all be able to find the topic important to them easily.
4) The essay format that we were taught in high school was the same layout over again with maybe a different topic. There was no discussion of visual design or rhetorical content. I feeling that allowing students to broaden their research and writing ideas will allow for better written assignments. It seems also that with so much emphasis on internet and media these days that it will eventually become impossible to not incorperate visual presentation at least to some degree to our assignments.

Porter
Discussion and Journaling
4) Writing from what I get from this article is evaluated buy certain forums, which is basically a group of people that have knowledge of what they are evaluating and also have guidelines that they have to adhere to.He feels that the key criteria for this is the "acceptability" within the reader's community. The piece of work being evaluated must contribute something to the field along with demonstrating familiar characteristics of previous pieces of writing. It also has to meet specific criteria within the group and testing so to speak to be considered an acceptable piece of work. This community will influence other writers also.
I did not really have a basis to go on prior to reading Porter's article. However this makes sense to me and I can see how a piece of work is evaluated by a certain group of people and how they influence writers and their work.
The only thing I have to compare to would be writing as a high school student. The only person that evaluated my work was the teacher who may have had knowledge in writing in general but not knowledge on a certain topic that I was writing about. Where as in Porter's article the community that is evaluating the pieces of work he is talking about is very educated in this field and has a background in what they are evaluating.
5} Porter's article I feel reflects the principles that he is writing about in that he is discussing the ways that intertextuality affects research and writing and how it is also affected by an audience or forum that analyzes pieces of work. He is not writing as a autonomous person in that I think his writings in this article are taken from other authors examples and Porter's own research on the 4 examples that he gives under the Presence of Intertext. He also states in his writing that intertextuality can also come from audience expectation. So as we read this article we may have more of an influence on how it is perceived then how Porter wrote it.
Applying and Exploring
2) Plagiarism has always been a very strict rule when it comes to writing. The school definition basically allows you to not use any part of any ones work unless it has been quoted and referenced too. My definition of plagiarism using Porter's example would be that you could use other authors ideas as long as you could be creative enough to put your own twist on them to make it your own and showed that you did the research needed to make it your own. My definition is probably not strict enough and would lead to plagiarism being a big problem in writing class. However I do feel at times the current rule of plagiarism can be too strict and can cause writers to not be able to write about things they truly want to write about. If their was a way to meet in the middle between plagiarism as we have been taught and my example using Porter's views writing may become a little more interesting.
MM
Porter's article seems to imply that writers spend more of their time researching and talking to people to get ideas and information for their text. It does not seem like writers spend a lot of time on their own because the basis of their writings is their research and discussion with others.I always pictured writers as people that would go off for months at a time and lock themselves in a room and write until their work was done.Porter's article seems to state that authors actually do the complete opposite. I feel that I would most likely be the writer portrayed in Porter's article.

Getting Ready to Read
1)There are many ways to construct an identity on Facebook. Information about ones self can be put on the profile page such as where you went to school and where you work. You can a profile picture and post other pictures to your albums. All of these make up who we are and forms our identity. You can do status updates about yourself, post comments and "like" different pages which can also show your identity by letting people know what you are interested in.
Your identity at home may differ from that on Facebook in many ways. Some people my choose to be more conservative about themselves online where others tend to paint a picture so to speak of themselves that may not be their true identity but what they want people to think about them. Identity at home is your true self and what people who know you well see as your identity.
2) Using the first person within our writing assignments I feel would allow us to make our writing more personal rather then subjective. It would allow for more feeling and emotion. Not using first person I think can make us distance ourselves from our writing, not intentionally but using 'I" seems to automatically make things seem more personal to ourselves and also affects how the audience perceives them.
Discussion/Journaling
Voice is our inner self. We use it to express ourselves in many aspects of our lives. From writing to how we dress to how we act around others. It is there in every aspect of our daily lives. Yes I believe there are many definitions of voice and I believe we are exposed to them every day especially from the media and the Internet. I definitely agree with Elbow's definition of voice. Taking from his explanation of sincerity as an example of voice, I feel that political figures do this a lot to sound sincere and really touch their audience on a personal level whether what they have to say is true or not. That want to capture their audience. We see this daily on the news right now with the upcoming election being in just a few months.
Apply and Explore
Sincerity is a voice that can be convincing and can easily win the attention of readers
Resonance is when a writer can get lost in their words and may get off track for a short time in their writing.
I do not feel that I had much difficulty coming up with the meanings of these to examples of voice. However the meaning may be different to someone else. Having difficulty with their meaning may show that you do not understand them or you may have a hard time putting the meaning into your own words.
Connecting to Other Readings
Elbow believes voice is very much rhetorical and is used to make specific arguments. However n Kleine's research he found that his subjects from the sciences seemed to be more interested in the research process itself and not the rhetorical aspect involving the audience. They were more interested in gathering information and not what the audience would think or feel. Where the subjects from the Humanities were more interested in the rhetorical aspect of the writing.

Berkenkotter and Murray
Discussion and Journaling
1}I felt that Murray's writing process was very off the wall so to speak. Seemed like a lot of repeat work but at the same time seemed to work well for him. I at this point have not developed a good writing process. I am still trying to understand the concept of writing as it has been many years since I have had to write. I liked the idea of his dictations. Seems like it would be easier to review and draft your work.
3} Prior to he study of Murray Revision and planning seemed to be 2 separate steps in the writing process. While studying Murray's writing habits she used a coding process to evaluate his process. She realized by this that the 2 were virtually inseparable. He combined them into one process described as Reconciving.
Applying and exploring
1} I have very little writing experience. This is all very new to me. I am at this point trying to understand the steps of the writing process and apply them the best I can to the upcoming paper I am writing. I feel that with experience comes a better understanding and it's not always the quantity of time you spend but the quality of your work when it is completed but at the same time you do need to put time and effort into your work.
MM
As I referred to in one of the prior questions, I like the idea of the dictation process. I may try this in my own writing to see if it works for me. Seems like a good idea but may not be once I have tried to use it. Seems like it would be easier to keep thoughts and ideas together.

Allen
Getting ready to read
It seems from reading Sarah Allen's The Inspired Writer Vs the Real writer that student writers seem to focus more on the draft of a formal paper along with the grammar and punctuation. They are use to writing in a high school setting and tend to follow the 5 paragraph formula that Allen refers to.Professional writers focus on strategies and revision of their work. They are similar in that both student and professional writers all struggle at times.Allen refers to the sinking, spinning feeling she still gets when reading and writing along with the trudging feeling at times when searching for ideas. All writers student or experienced all come to the same road blocks.
Applying and Exploring ideas
I have not personally used this method of imitation in my own writing. This is the first writing class I have been in since high school 20 years ago. I feel however that this method my help someone in my position that is trying to learn the process of writing to begin to put together the process of writing and then form my own individual ideas and methods.
Discussion and Journaling
Allen believes that the myth of the inspired writer is that writing comes easily to he/she. The reality is that the inspired writer also had to answer to great writings that were before them. They to in fact had to deal with struggling for ideas and the feeling that their work did not meet the standards put before them. This works against us as student writers in the fact that this myth gives us the feeling that if writing does not come easy to us we can never be good at it. It makes us give up so to speak on trying to be good writers and put less time and effort into our work because we assume that if we struggle our writing is not good.
MM
Yes the idea of the inspired writer affects me now as I am trying to work on the first project of this writing class. By reading her article I have come to realize that I am not alone in the feeling of being unable to be inspired or write. It also makes me realize that it is okay that ideas and understanding the process of writing does not come easy to me.

New Proposal
I believe I have a little bit better understanding of what we are supposed to be writing about. This is definitely a learning process.
Taking from my first proposal, the construct that I am going to write about is the freedom to pick your own topic in writing. Ideas and topics seem to be the basis for any piece of writing. If one is able to choose their own topic and come up with their own ideas then they are more likely to to make the writing more interesting to an audience. The freedom to make choices and decisions in writing will make one grow as a student and as an individual and at the same time giving a better understanding of writing. It lets us be individuals and write about what interests us and not what interests someone else or what they think should interest us.It is a way to express ones self and feelings and this is what makes us all unique. This individuality is the voice of ones self through their writing. Our work will be more authentic and original which will capture the audience attention. If a topic is interesting to us we are more likely to do better research, which will lead to better ideas, arguments, facts, and opinions. This will not only make the writing more interesting for the audience but will also help to broaden and strengthen our writing skills. If you don't care about the topic you are writing about or it doesn't interest you, then most likely the audience will not be interested either.

I think if I were going to draw a picture of a woman I would have her face to the left with her head looking back over her right shoulder. Because to me that would be how I wanted to see her in my drawing. That is probably one of the best ways to show her sexuality without demeaning her but at the same time would make her the focus of the drawing.
You set the scene up to where she would be in direct moonlight off a lake or a pond with a Shaw over her left shoulder draped down to about the middle of her back. A few fully bloomed trees with freshly cut grass.
This would be a nude painting because it shows the vulnerability of the woman to which would make people see her as a person that most could relate to as shy but still very much a woman of sexuality.
Classical art typically portrayed woman and men nude. This was seen in that time period as normal.Men were usually the painters and this is how they interpreted their sexuality. Modern day art and pictures in magazines still portray woman sexually but nudity is not accepted as it was in the day of classical art. Woman today are also seen as more independent and strong not just for their sexuality alone.
Discussion Question#1
Yes I think that where they portrayed these woman they had their self pleasures in mind. At the same time they are trying to make them tasteful enough not to make them so risque. I think that Berger Would agree to a point. He may not say that I am a hundred percent right bu for the most part would be spot on.

You see women in advertising all over the place in sexual poses anywhere from makeup ads to Victoria Secret catalogs. I don't think much has changed they still show woman as sex symbols because men are still seen as the ideal spectator.
I think that the portrayal of woman is still the same, they have something that sells. Maybe in mid-evil Europe the product was different but it was still a product.Woman are shown to be more powerful and strong minded in today's culture.Men want to see this to make them feel masculine in all aspects of life.
Apply Question #1
Men in classical art were also portrayed for their sexuality but not in the same sense as today. Modern art/pictures portray men more for their masculinity. Yes I feel their is a generation gap between them and it is greatly affected by the way they are portrayed.

When reading the spectator would be us the reader and the subject would be the text we are reading.i don't enter in relations ships the only time you should is if its something you want to read.

Before you read
You can see faces in the knots of the wood grain on the desk and can also find them in the ceiling tiles. When you closely enough at each knot you see different faces. Each is unique in it's own way. They all resemble faces but not anyone in particular. They all resemble something such as birds bills, the eyes of animals, just different animals none are really human to me.
Discussion question #1
I think that adults still like the simplicity of cartoons because it takes us back to child hood where everything was simple and you didn't have much responsibility. You could relate to what you are watching or reading it was an illusion of heroism or made you want to become something yo were not.
No because like I said before you can relate to simpler times. You can imagine yourself as being a hero or a funny character in comics.
I think that he would have said that I am right. I think that is why he wrote it in that way because he still thinks in that way. He and I think in my opinion that it's not a dry article and with cartoons you can come across easier and make it more interesting. That way you can keep your readers entertained.

I think that i answered this question but lets reiterate. I think he uses this format to keep the reader interested with pictures. It helps to break up the reading with visual props.
If you did not have pictures and only text I think that it would have been very hard to read and that no one could keep focus on the topic. If that were the case you would have to read it several times and you would be so confused that you would not get the main point of the article.
Apply Question #1
Yes the imagery helps put the main topic into a better perspective. Take the Writing about Writing book, if it had more pictures to help integrate the topic I would find it more interesting, not so bland and dry. It would help me to grasp the concepts easier.
#2
I believe that he says that because what we are doing when we see those images is not really putting it in our own image but putting it in a simpler for as children do.
I am sure that we do that more then we think. I think that in our subconscious mind we try to relate to most things we see and read, so that we can understand what is going on to to try to imagine what it would be like to be in their shoes so to speak.

Proposal
September 5, 2012
In order to write an informative paper you need to be interested in the topic you are writing about first. I have chosen to write on the topic of the recent Ohio State Buckeye football scandal. While doing research for this paper it will be very easy to fall into the "gap" of research and become opinionated. My goal is to apply the rhetorical analysis aspect of writing and gathering information. There are many facts and opinions to this topic.Keeping an open mind while doing this research will help me follow Toulmin's Model of Argument and use Greene's method of Argument as Conversation to relay the information to readers.
Kantz questions
September 5, 2012
Question 1: I believe that Kantz feels that both facts and opinions are the same thing with a twist. The twist being how the reader perceives the information given to them. The argument between fact and opinion is that the reader will accept facts without being proved but may want further explanation. An opinion however is perceived as a claim and may require further proof but even after this is given it may be decided that their is still only limited truth to the information given and may still be open for further discussion..
Question 2: Misunderstanding how the Kinneavy's triangle works by only considering 1 point.
Not setting goals or asking questions before starting research.
Blindly accepting ideas
Not understanding the idea of Rhetorical analysis and falling into a gap.
Not summarizing main ideas of reading.
Yes I feel she is correct in that we fall into a gap of only perceiving what is easily available instead of considering all information available.
I understand the goal of Rhetorical research but I am not sure I completely understand how to put it to use.
A and E Question 2: It's been 20 years since I have been in high school and have had to do research for writing. However this can be applied to everyday life so to speak. In life we tend to do the things listed above without being open to new ideas. We also tend to believe what is put in front of us so to speak and not look further into the situation.
MM: I feel she is trying to analyze the Rhetorical analysis and gaps that we tend to fall into while researching. Understanding this will help me to gather research more effectively and gain more useful information by applying her findings and claims.
